Interview with Romantic Suspense Novelist-Brittney Sahin

Brittney has lovingly sat down to answer these questions for us to get to know her better:

1) Describe how you became an author. Your journey.

I feel like I have been writing since I learned how to form letters on paper… When I was younger, you would either find me writing a book—or reading one! I always dreamed of one day being a published author, but I knew how difficult it would be to have my book professionally published (and self-publishing wasn’t a/v when I was younger). I studied history (not English Lit—crazy, I know) at Binghamton University in NY, and was recruited by a program called Teach for America. It is an organization, which is dedicated to closing the educational gaps in our country. I was sent to Houston, Texas to teach. After my experience in Houston, I studied for my masters in Social Studies Education and Inclusive Special Education at Syracuse University. I began teaching high school history upon completion of my master’s degrees. But when my husband’s job took us back to the city I grew up in (where I first began writing)—with encouragement of my husband—I decided to follow my childhood dreams. I never submitted my work to one of the big 5 publishers, and I’m not sure if I ever will. I have enjoyed the experience of self-publishing.

  • 2) What is the title of your current novel? When will it be released? Target audience? Genre.

Innocence & Betrayal releases March 1st. It is a romance suspense novel—with an emphasis on the mystery/suspense elements. The book drops you right in the middle of the action.

The book I am currently writing is the third book in my Hidden Truths series—title is still a work in progress (hate choosing titles).

  • 3) Could you provide a summary or blurb about the book you’re about to release?

Reserved biochemist Ava Daniels has spent the last six months working on a top secret assignment for Homeland Security. One morning, after a night of finally letting loose, she discovers her lab empty and her boss missing. Interrogated by the very organization she works for, followed by unknowns, and attacked, Ava finds herself in search of answers as the clock winds down.

Aiden O’Connor, Irish born and raised, attempted to put his past behind him when he opened a bar in the heart of Boston. One night, Ava Daniels shows up to his bar asking for help. She is like no other woman he has ever met—breathtakingly beautiful, brilliant, and in terrible danger. Once he learns the true nature of her problem, Aiden realizes she is the key to unlock his past . . . and perhaps to get a second chance.

Innocence & Betrayal is the second novel in the Hidden Truths series. It is a STAND-ALONE book, which features characters from Silenced Memories.

  • 4) When writing – what is your typical process? Do you plan everything out – or let the words fly with the wind?

I do both. I actually submit my plot and character overviews to my editor before writing. It saves a lot of time if I have any character/plot issues—she helps point them out to me. But—new/better ideas might come to me while writing—and so the direction can & usually changes somewhat…

  • 5) What is your preferred reading format? E-book or paperback?

Because of time constraints (and two kids)—I usually read e-books, but I have to be honest—I really miss the feel of a paperback in my hands. I might shift back to paperbacks for a bit!

  • 6) What are your favorite genres to read? Favorite authors?

I love romance novels (contemporary, suspense). I also love mysteries/thrillers. The first romance author I ever read was Judith McNaught. Prior to discovering romance when I was 20, I stuck to James Patterson, Stephen King, Dan Brown, Anne Rice, Iris Johanson, Allison Brennan, and J.D. Robb (not Nora Roberts, actually). But—my aunt left a copy of a romance novel at my house when visiting; I picked it up and read it cover to cover. Ever since that moment, I have been a romance addict! I read everything from Meredith Wild to Nora Roberts. And I’m a big fan of Nicholas Sparks.
